GARDENA , CA – July 27th, 2006 – Pegasys Inc. announces that its flagship product, TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress (Ver. 4.2.1.188), officially supports the latest Intel® Core™2 Duo processor.
The Core™2 processor is based on the Core™ micro-architecture developed by Intel®. The extended instruction set within the Intel® Core™2 processors (codenamed Conroe and Merom) allows more efficient processing when compared to the streaming SIMD extended instruction set (SSE2/SSE3).
Using the new extended instruction set, TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress achieves a 5 to 18 % speed increase when compared to the original Intel® streaming SIMD extended instruction set. Moreover, the speed gain can reach 38% when comparing Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6600 processor and the Intel® Pentium D 940 while encoding high definition video.

Details regarding the speed acceleration provided by the new extended instruction set in TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress.
In order to take advantage of the performance boost offered by the Intel® Core™2 processor during the MPEG-1/2 encoding, TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress algorithms were rewritten and optimized. Calculation intensive processes such as quantization or motion detection have been set to use the new extended instruction set. The memory access numbers have been largely and successfully reduced when enabling the new extended instruction set, with a resulting speed increase of up to 18% in motion detection’s “High precision” mode.
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress has also added the following:
1- Code optimization of motion detection processes, which is the most important part of the MPEG encoding process.
2- The codebase is optimized, thanks to the single unit performance comparison with the original Intel® streaming SIMD extended instruction set.
Already optimized for multi-processor encoding, TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress has pushed the limits of the Intel® Core™2 Duo’s multithreading capabilities, and will now let you experience truly exemplary performance.
Mr. Machida, Director of the Business Development at Intel Japan, declared about TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress; “We welcome the announce of the support of the Intel® Core™2 Duo processor by TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress (Ver. 4.2.1.188). By using a PC embedding the latest Intel® Core™2 Duo processor and multithreaded application, users can smoothly achieve highly process intensive task like high definition video work.”

According to benchmark tests made using the Intel® Core™2 Duo processor in comparison to older processor models, the test results show an overall large performance increase.
The operating speed for TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress when using the Intel® Core™2 Duo processor is slower if the new extended instruction set is disabled and the SSE, SSE2, and SSE3 instruction sets are enabled in the Preferences window. This is compared to when all the instruction sets except for SSE3 are enabled. We believe this is due to our optimized routines and the manner in which the Intel® Core™2 Duo processor SSE2 instruction set is processed, whereas the SSE3 instruction set seems to have compatibility issues. When using the Intel® Core™2 Duo processor, please enable the new extended instruction set only.
