Watch Live TV on Your PC

Turn your PC into a broadcast TV! All you need is a TV tuner device to start enjoying live TV on your computer. There are various types of TV tuner devices with the most popular being external USB devices or internal cards that install inside your computer. They let you plug in your coax cable from your antenna or cable box and decode the signal for display through your PC.

Make Your PC a DVR

If you have enough hard drive space, you can use Windows Media Center as a DVR (digital video recorder) to record live TV. The integrated program guide lets you easily schedule which shows you want to record! Why pay extra for a set-top DVR when you can just use your PC? Best of all, you can access your recorded video files for editing and archiving; unlike most set-top DVRs, where your recordings are stuck in the DVR until you delete them.

Besides watching and recording live TV, Windows Media Center lets you play videos on your computer's hard drive, view photos, listen to music, and more!

For More Information:

The .WTV File Format

If you're using Windows Media Center with Windows 7 or Windows Vista (with Media Center TV Pack 2008), then your recorded TV shows will be saved in the .wtv format. It replaces the .dvr-ms format which is the format used by older versions of Windows Media Center.

Thankfully, 3 flagship TMPGEnc products can import both .wtv and .dvr-ms files, allowing you the freedom to edit and convert your recordings as you wish!

What is the .WTV Format?

The .wtv format is a new video container format used exclusively by Microsoft for TV programs recorded by Windows Media Center. This file format is only found on computers running Windows 7 and Windows Vista (with Media Center TV Pack 2008). PCs running Windows Media Center on other operating systems will record TV programs in the .dvr-ms format.

What Can I Do With These Files?

The advantage of using Windows Media Center over a set-top DVR is that you have easy access to your recorded TV shows as video files. However, only a select number of software programs can read .wtv and .dvr-ms files.

TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5, TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 3, and TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 can import both formats. See the section above to learn more about what you can do with your Windows TV files with these products.
